SYTYCD SEASON 6 EPISODE 6

Salt Lake City, Utah was the last stop of the audition tour, and drew in the biggest crowd of hopefuls yet. Joining Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy at the judges’ table was Mia Michaels.

First up was Bryan Boyer, a b-boy who specializes in power moves and stunts that look painful. Cat wore his helmet as Bryan spun on his head directly on the concrete. When Bryan took the stage for his audition, he kicked it off with some high-flying flips. Nigel thought this was one of the best hip hop routines they’ve seen this season. Mary liked Bryan’s personality, and Mia summed up his performance in one word – “awesome.” The three judges ask Bryan to stick around for choreography.

Tristy Mirci has had some unfortunate luck – she’s been in 25 car accidents in just 3 years. None were her fault; she was always the passenger. Hoping to break her streak of bad luck, Tristy danced for the judges. Unfortunately, she was not good enough for a professional competition like SYTYCD, so she’s going home…by foot.

Hayley Cloud experienced a dance related injury which gave her a herniated disk in her back. The doctors believed she would have permanent nerve damage, but she has recovered. Hayley danced and tumbled on the stage with such strength, you would never guess she experienced such a major injury. Mary called Hayley “strong, powerful, uninhibited.” Mia read in her notes that Hayley said she could do a handstand for 5-8 minutes, and she challenged Hayley to hold one for the remainder of her critique session. When Hayley landed back on her feet she said, “I can’t live without dance. It’s my life.” The judges agreed and Hayley is going to Vegas.

Megan Kinney was back for Season 6 auditions. She auditioned for Season 5 and made it to Vegas. Megan’s sister is Caitlin Kinney, who made the Top 12 on Season 5 and is currently touring around the country with the Season 5 finalists. For the second season in a row, Megan received a ticket to Vegas.

Genise Ruidiaz is a very flexible dancer. She amazed the judges with her bends and is on her way to Las Vegas.

Nigel was in heaven in Salt Lake City, as was made evident by a montage of Nigel blushing as he watched beautiful ladies who could dance. But then there was Ariana Rowley, a local burlesque dancer. For her audition, Ariana danced suggestively with a chair. After her performance, the camera panned to a silent audience. Mia was speechless too. Mary asked Ariana about her training, while Mia mustered up the words “weak and trashy.” Nigel was entertained, and he and Mia sent Ariana to choreography, where she’ll have to work with a partner instead of a chair.

Iveta Lukosiute is a ballroom dancer from Lithuania who came to America for opportunities. The radiant Iveta performed a ballroom routine with her partner that blew the judges away. Nigel called her vivacious and said she danced brilliantly. “I haven’t enjoyed a couple who dance this much since Anya and Pasha,” Nigel stated. The performance made Mary cry because she was so moved by the exquisite ballroom dancing she had just witnessed. Mia called Iveta “magical,” and Mary wiped her tears and said, “She has hot tamale written all over her.” It was no surprise after those rave reviews that Iveta was going to Vegas.

At the end of day one, Season 3 alums Anya and Pasha taught choreography to the dancers who were asked to stick around. Bryan Boyer couldn’t keep up with the steps, so he quit 15 minutes into the session, calling it “too tough.” Ariana performed for the judges, but she was not good enough to receive a plane ticket. When the day was done, 13 other dancers made it through to Vegas.

On the very last day of hometown auditions, we see Pascal Nayigiziki. The way he dances is by listening to music, and allowing the song to dictate his performance. An energetic Pascal took the stage. You can’t deny his passion, but his performance just seemed to be a series of frantic movements, which Mary enjoyed imitating. The judges wanted to know what kind of dance that was. Pascal threw out hip hop and swagger as options, but Nigel said “No, it is Pascal style.” The judges were entertained, but it’s not good enough for SYTYCD.

After a montage of powerful couples with good chemistry, we met Ashleigh and Ryan Di Lello, a married couple from Orem, Utah. They used to be ballroom dance competitors, but now they’re partners. Ashleigh said, “We don’t have to fake the chemistry.” After their audition together, Mary thought Ryan was a very strong dancer, but thought that Ashleigh’s expression while dancing was a little fake. Nigel thought Ashleigh was “over-egging” it, but he said the dancing from this couple was terrific. The judges decided to send both Di Lellos to choreography.

Leigh Asay and Josh Murillo have only been practicing together for 2.5 weeks. Leigh auditioned for the show before, and she was hesitant to audition again after going through the heartbreak of not making the Top 20. The duo performed a strong routine and showed a lot of personality. However, during their audition, Leigh lost her entire big toenail and it began to bleed all over the stage. Leigh was so pumped after her performance that she humorously shooed the medics away so she could get straight to the critiques. Nigel said that she “nailed it.” Mia said that if she can tolerate this pain, there’s no stopping her. Nigel was impressed with the fact that they’re a new couple and performed so well together. The judges decided to send Josh to choreography, but first he carried Leigh to get a ticket to Vegas from the judges. On her way out of the auditorium, Leigh yelled, “I’m going to Vegas and the emergency room!”

In the last session of Season 6 auditions choreography with Anya and Pasha, dancers attempted to master their moves. Josh will not be going to Vegas with Leigh, but Ryan and Ashleigh get to pack their bags for Nevada. In addition to the Di Lellos, 19 other dancers from day two in Salt Lake are going to Vegas.
